Who is it for?
This course is suitable for employees who have:
- been working in a customer facing or food handling role
- have been applying infection control policies and procedures in their workplace for at least a month
- have access to someone in their workplace who can attest to them applying infection control policies and procedures
The Course
This course has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of what infection prevention and control is, how infection occurs in the workplace, and the steps you can take to help minimise the risk of infection.
It has been developed to cover the unit of competency HLTINFCOV001 – Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures. To be issued with the national statement of attainment, learners will need to complete the following:

Overview | Basic microbiology and the chain of infection, so participants have a base understanding for applying precautions. | 30 minutes |
Precautions | Standard and transmission based precautions used to break the chain of infection and stop the spread. Why these are important and how to implement them properly | 60 minutes |
Risk Management | Risk assessment process applied to infection control, where participants have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learnt to their workplace and take a risk based approach to applying infection prevention and control precautions. | 30 minutes |
Assessment | Learners will need to answer a series of online multiple choice and short answer questions. They will also need to provide photographic or video evidence of them applying what they’ve learnt in the workplace. | Allow 2 hours |
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Follow precautions for infection prevention and control.
- Identify infection hazards and assess the risk, and
- Follow procedures for managing risks associated with infection transmission.
Course delivery and support
The course is a self-paced online course, with videos and activities, which can be completed on either computer or tablet with sound enabled. The course will be personalised based on the learner’s work environment. They will be requested to select the most suitable environment at the start of the course and can change this at any time in the course settings.
